Today Adam had a poetry reading at school…and not just any reading, either. The class was set-up like one of those coffee-houses popular with the Beat Generation in the 50’s and 60’s. Parents were invited to listen to their kids, but instead of clapping, everyone just snapped their fingers!

Adam read a couple of his poems…

So spicy could be
crunchy and sweet
could tickle your throat
So skinny and round
taste like cheese with
my yellow dip or more
spicy with the hot red dip
Mexican food so chippy
so yummy explodes so
so delicious so smelly
super smooth

and this one about his dog, Charlie…

I am a dog
I have fur
My skin is gold
I have sharp teeth
I am fast
I love water
I have a big black nose.

Lay it on me, man, I dig it!

I’ve been thinking about buying a boat for some time now, but really wasn’t sure I wanted to take on the responsibilities of owning one. After all, there’s the expense, which in addition to the purchase price of the boat, there’s gas, maintenance and repairs, docking and storage, cleaning, equipment, such as life jackets and a trailer, and registration and insurance. Whew! Then, what kind of boat do I want: A deck boat? bowrider? fishing boat? Finally, the time it takes for cleaning, maintenance, and launch and recovery. So, with all this in mind, it’s no wonder I was dragging my feet. I’d have probably dropped it altogether if the boys didn’t remind me every time we drove past a marina.

Well, I recently discovered an alternative to boat ownership: The Freedom Boat Club. This is a private member’s only boat club that provides all the perks of boat ownership without all the hassles. For a nominal membership fee and monthly dues (which are actually cheaper than the amount I’d pay for a berth at the marina), I have access to a fleet of boats. And since FBC is nationwide, I have access to boats in more than 75 locations throughout the US. After my monthly dues, my only expense is the fuel I use. Sounds like a great deal, right? So, where do I sign?

Wait! Before I put pen-to-paper, the deal had to pass the Alex test! It’s like “Mikey” in that old Life cereal commercial…if Mikey likes it, it must be good! I was concerned that Alex would not like being out on the water, so me and the boys took a boat for a test drive. Both Adam and Alex were excited when I told them we were going out on the boat today, but as we walked to the dock, Alex began to have second thoughts. And when I put on his life jacket, he became even more skittish. Finally, by the time we got ready to board, he was in complete, “I want to go home” mode. Well, thank heavens for Lamby!

I thought we might need Alex’s “little buddy,” so I brought him along. I pulled Lamby out of my backpack and let him get on the boat first. Once Lamby made the jump, Alex was able to step onto the deck. And although Alex was whimpering a little bit as we pulled away from the dock, it didn’t take long for his Lamby-infused courage to take hold!

And they had a BLAST!

A bit of Halloween day fun at school as the boys dress in their THIRD SET of costumes for the “Literacy Parade”.

Alex is dressed as his favorite book character: Pete the Cat. Mom made this costume featuring Pete’s “Four Groovy Buttons”…

Of course, Action Adam is the Fire Chief!

Kameran recently read, “Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank. This was the diary kept by Anne Frank while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in WWII. For her book report, Kam dressed as Anne Frank. I think this was an outstanding costume, and I’m certain added tremendously to the telling of the tragic story.

The boys have begun saying their prayers at night. They put their hands together and bow their heads as mom or dad says the prayer, then they both say, “Amen.” Too cute!

Note to self: Although it’s tradition, and you’d think, harmless, to wish them, “Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite,” one should never say the “bedbug” part to Adam. We said that to him, and he worriedly looked down at his mattress saying “Bite”-“Bug”-“Bite” as he climbed out of bed, never to return.

It took about 30-minutes to reassure him that there were, in fact, no bedbugs or bugs of any kind, in his bed, and there was nothing that was going to bite him.

Which was fortunate, otherwise we were looking at having to do something like this…

Despicable Me We recently picked up a copy of Despicable Me on Blu-Ray.

The boys love it…especially Alex! (Dad likes it, too!)

The story features super-villain Felonious Gru (Steve Carell), who operates out of his suburban home that serves as a front for an underground lair where he, his partner, Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand), and thousands of short yellow minions plan their nefarious deeds. The minions are these little yellow, ovalish creatures in blue coveralls that sound just like Alex when they laugh!

Evidently, they think so, too…

After a painfully long, drawn-out Winter (which seemed to stretch into May), it’s finally looking and feeling like Spring. The days since we’ve been home have been in the 70s and 80s, the grass is growing (and so are the weeds), and the flowers are blooming…

In fact, they seem pretty inviting to this little bumble bee:

Breaking news from Hollywood: Alex to star in the next James Bond thriller, Dr. Poop. Of course the thouchy-feely, namby-pamby execs in the studio weren’t “comfortable” with a 2-year-old staring down the barrel of a gun, so they opted for a slide instead…

It’s been raining incessantly for what seems like weeks. This afternoon, the skies cleared and a rainbow appeared above the trees in the backyard. Maybe…just maybe…this is an indication that the discouraging downfalls are coming to an end…

Otherwise, I’m gonna have to start collecting animals and constructing an ark…
