Today we took our boat out of Beach Marine and headed up the Intracoastal. The boys were looking forward to a new adventure.

Underway

We headed west on the St Johns River toward Jacksonville and we’re soon approaching the Dames Point Bridge.

Approaching the Dames Point Bridge

We had crossed this bridge plenty of times in the car, but this was our first time traveling under it.

Dames Point Bridge

Along the way, there were a lot of little barrier islands to explore, so we tied the boat up to one and Cindy snapped some pictures while the boys did a little swimming.

I came home from work today and the boys wanted to hit the water! What a GREAT idea! The weather called for a chance of showers, so no worries there! I changed my clothes and we were off…

However, it is Florida in the Summer and a “chance of showers” can quickly change to “thunderstorm imminent”…

Thunderstorm

Anyway, it wasn’t too difficult dodging the storm. In fact, the storm actually split as it moved (much like the parting of the Red Sea) and we were able to shoot right down the middle and around the storm. We end-up taking a leisurely cruise down Black Creek before skirting the storm clouds on our way back to the marina.

Crusing

Funny. There was rain all around us, but we didn’t feel a drop!

Boating season has officially started! Today, the boys and I took Charlie out on the water for a few hours…

On the boat

It seems like it’s been forever since we’ve felt the wind and spray in our face…especially Alex!

On the boat

It was GREAT just being outside! It got a little cloudy and we got a few sprinkles, but that didn’t put a damper on our fun!

On the way back to the marina, Adam took the wheel for a bit…

This year we took to the boat for our annual family Christmas pictures. We docked on Julington Creek, set-up the camera, then set the timer…again and again. As always there’s one or two good ones in the bunch. Don’t know if these will make the final cut (that’s Cindy’s job), but you get the picture (pun intended)…

Family Boat

…and outside the boat…

Getting a good picture of the boys and Charlie is a lot like herding cats…

Family Boat

We spent about 30-minutes taking pictures. In between Cindy’s arranging the boys, the dog, and the boat, I snapped the scenery…

Deck

When the pictures were done, we headed back to the marina. The sun was getting low in the sky, so we took our time. The boys napped under the watchful eyes of their best friend…

Today, the Scout Master and I took some of the Den 1 boys (our kids) out on the river to work on one of their Tiger elective adventures: Floats and Boats. This is a great way for Tigers to learn about different types of boats and how to stay safe on the water.

And they were PUMPED!

Scouts

We headed-up Julington Creek and docked the boat at a friendly dock for our “scout time”…

Scouts

We had several items we wanted to check-off today and the boys were pretty well engaged. It’s fun to be outside with the boys doing something new. As part of today’s adventure, the boys…

  • Demonstrated they could correctly put on and fasten a life jacket;
  • Identified five different types of boats;
  • Learned the S-C-O-U-T water safety chant;
  • Showed how to safely help someone who needs assistance in the water, without having to enter the water; and
  • Built a boat from recycled materials to float on the water.

And with our work done, we just enjoyed the rest of the morning on the water…

Hard to believe, but were heading out on the water AGAIN! Today, we have Jess and Emilo and family, plus Kameran’s plus one. So, we’ll be taking out a pontoon boat…and this Sweatwater beauty means we’ll be riding in STYLE

Sweetwater

Soon, the brood is onboard and we’re underway…

Underway

We don’t really have anything planned today. Just cruise up the St Johns into Jax and maybe we’ll spy a dolphin or two. It was great just to relax and enjoy the time together.

And of course, with all these mates, I don’t have to sit behind the wheel…

And Cindy even get’s in a little Rodan+Fields work…what a GREAT office!

Cindy Works

We docked at the Jacksonville Landing, and walked around the restaurants and shops for a bit. Since it was Sunday, a lot of them were closed. Still, it was nice to get out and stretch our legs a bit, before climbing back on board and heading up the river to see if we could see some Dolphins.

Jax Landing

Emilo took the wheel as we headed under the Main Street bridge. While the kids kept their eyes open for dolphins, I just enjoyed the sunshine.

Watching for Dolphins

And it didn’t take long before we saw a entire POD!

We were able to get pretty close as they swam alongside the boat.

After the dolphin show, we took Jessica Lorraine to see the Jessica Lorraine

It was a great day! Everyone was a bit tired, but still wore a smile…except for those that were asleep!

The weather has been so good this weekend and I thought the best way enjoy it was with another day on the water. Today, we departed from the Julington Creek Marina, and with a little throttle the boys soon have a blast maintaining their balance as the boat pops up-and-down. Adam says they’re surfing.

Surfing

So, as we’ve done so many times before, we head up the St John’s to The Jacksonville Landing. Our destination? The ice cream shop! So, scoops all around…and a beer for me. 😉

One the way home, the boys got some driving in…

Okay…now I can go to work tomorrow!

Today, Adam and I hit the water in St Augustine. We left out of the marina on Camachee Island and headed “downtown”. The inlet channel was a little rough today, but Adam loved the bumpy ride, and was grinning from ear-to-ear.

Me and Adam

As we passed by the “Old Fort”, we noticed they were about to fire the cannon, so we hung out for a few minutes and watched the show.

Me and Adam

There was a lot of traffic on the water today, but once things opened-up a bit, I was able to let Adam take the wheel. As we headed down the channel, Adam was singing, “Yo-Ho! Yo-Ho! A pirates life for me!”

Me and Adam

On our way back, we took a detour toward Anastasia State Park for a look at the St Augustine Lighthouse

It was a great afternoon, and with the sky opening-up after a week of rainy weather, it was fun to be outdoors!

Summer is in full swing as we hit the water again. Today, the boys got some practice driving the boat! Both did exceptionally well, and look like naturals behind the wheel…

Captain Adam Captain Alex

We had planned to head up the St John’s to have lunch at the Jacksonville Landing, but on the way we encountered a family whose boat was dead in the water. We had just passed under the Buckman Bridge and saw a man waving his arms in distress. I turned our boat in his direction and came up alongside his boat. He explained that his engine had just stopped and asked for a tow to his slip at Doctor’s Lake (which was back the way we came). So, he threw me a line and I tied it off to the back of the boat, then turned back under the Buckman. When we arrived at the marina, we helped him tie-off to the dock and then said our farewells. They we very appreciative and offered some cash, but we refused. After all, it’s not like we had any hard-and-fast plans for the day, and this was really a bit of an adventure.

Anyway, instead of heading back up the river to Jax, we decided to head down Doctor’s Lake to have lunch at Whitey’s Fish Camp. We love Whitey’s! The food is great and the boys always get a kick out of docking at a restaurant to eat.

Leaving Whitey’s…

Leaving Whiteys

Once out on the open water again, the boys once again took the wheel, and Cindy and I just kicked-back and enjoyed the ride.

The weekend’s here and Cindy is at a scrapbooking event, so me and the boys are hitting the water!

Boys on the water The old man and the sea

We didn’t really have a destination in mind today, so we headed up the St John’s to the Jacksonville Landing, then back down to Fleming Island and home again.

Boys on the water The old man and the sea

It was great to just get away for the day, and leave the week behind!
