Today everyone got together at Pa’s house to, well, just be together, I guess. Ordinarily, my Aunt Ervie has a cook-out at her house on the Fourth of July, but today, everyone came here. No cookout, but an awful lot of food! The house doesn’t look the same without Pa sitting on the porch…

Earlier today I ran to the grocery store in Stuart and past the little diner where Pa ate almost every day…I don’t think there was anyone in this town who didn’t know him.

Well, the boys’ Spring Break is in full swing. This year, we decided to do a “staycation”, which means, essentially, a vacation in our own backyard. We’ve spent so much time traveling recently, it’s nice to just relax and take it easy.

Today, the boys and I took a quick trip to the Camp Blanding Joint Training Center, just outside of Starke.

Camp Blanding

Camp Blanding is the primary military reservation and training base for the Florida National Guard, and covers about 73,000 acres. It’s named after Lt Gen Albert H Blanding, who is among the most distinguished military figures in Florida’s history. He commanded the 31st Infantry Division and was appointed by FDR to serve as the Chief of the National Guard Bureau. During WWII, he was the military adviser to the Florida Governor.

Not that the boys were too interested in any of that. They wanted to see the heavy equipment on static display, like…

These static displays are part of the Camp Blanding Museum and Memorial Park. Located in one of Camp Blanding’s restored World War II buildings, the museum catalogs the history of both Camp Blanding and the Florida National Guard. The boys thought it was interesting, especially the Army uniforms and the weapons on display. Of course, I would’ve liked to have spent a little more time reading the history behind some of the displays, but the boys (being 8-years-old) were more into the “stuff” than the “substance”.

We’ll need to come back when they’re a little older. There’s a lot of military (and Florida) history on these grounds and within these walls…

Cindy and I had such a good time on the boat yesterday that we decided to take the boys to the Jacksonville Landing for lunch. As we enter the harbor and approach the Acosta Bridge, we notice that the Strauss Trunnion Bascule Bridge (rail) is down, which means there’s a train a-comin’.

The boys like waving at the engineer, who always waves back and blows the whistle (must be some sort of unwritten code among engineers…just like truck drivers).

Anyway, I turn the bow into the current to face the bridge with just enough throttle to keep us in place. Let the show begin!

BANZAI!

Today is the Super Bowl! Giants vs. the Pats, Baby! Manning vs. Brady! The boys are ready for the game…they have their jerseys on and the football is flying around the house, much to mom’s chagrin. Dad’s ready, too. The wings are on and the beer is chilled. You’ll note that only one of the boys is wearing a Super Bowl team jersey. That’s because I can’t bring myself to buy anything “Patriots”. Alas, it’s fitting that they should both be wearing Manning jerseys, as Peyton and Eli have given Tom Brady fits over the past few years.
