It’s been quite a year with a lot of changes and it’s good to go home. Funny. I haven’t lived here since I was 10-years-old, but after all these years, I still call it “home”. Mom and Dad are from this area, and moved back up here about 30-years ago. Over the years, we’ve spent time visiting in the Spring and Summer or around the Holidays. As we approach the house, John Denver’s song, “Country Roads,” comes to mind.

Home for the Holidays

Mom and Dad built this house on top of a hill on 10-acres of land.

The trees are so thick you can’t see it from the road, even when all the leaves have fallen.

The boys are happy to be here and Charlie is ecstacic!

Early this morning, Dad and I road into town so he could check his mail. This old Post Office hasn’t changed much. I remember the painting on the wall from when I was a kid.

Home for the Holidays

Right across the street from the Post Office is the Courthouse and standing out front is a statue of the town’s namesake, Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart.

“Quaint” doesn’t begin to describe the little town of Stuart, Virginia.

Today we went to The Main Event to do some bowling. The hardest part about bowling, of course, is selecting the right color bowling ball…

What was really interesting to watch was how much of their personality is displayed in their technique. Alex had a cautious and thoughtful style…

While Adam was direct and forceful, almost slinging the ball down the lane…

Dad? Well, it was hard to tell with all the gutter balls he was throwing. 🙂

The boys are 10-years-old today and Adam has already noted that he’s “a decade now.” Where has the time gone? Only a moment ago we were figuring-out the logistics of feeding two babies at the same time! It hasn’t always been easy, but we certainly have created some nice memories.

This year, they needed new bikes. Not only are they outgrowing their current rides, but like most boys, they’re pretty hard on those bikes, as evidenced by the dents, scratches, cracks, and tears decorating them. Each one tells a story, and like most boys, they love their bikes…

Birthday Birthday

Naturally, Mom is all over the “10-years” thing!

Birthday

And this also marks the first year they boys had a regular cake. As you’ll recall, in previous years, they had a “cake of cupcakes” in the shape of their age, as seen here.

Happy 10-years, Boys!

Okay, so Adam was playing soccer in the street with a neighborhood friend and a perfectly kicked ball broke the spigot off the water pipe in front of the house sending water spraying down the driveway.

Busted Pipe

What a site! Several neighbors came to help and we soon discover this pipe is in front of the water cut-off to the house, so we do a mad search for the city’s cut-off at the street. Long story short, we fond it and got the water turned-off. Honestly, I’m not sure why this pipe even had a spigot attached to it. This is the pipe from the street to the water softener, which then feeds into the house. A spigot was added as an afterthought.

Busted Pipe

Anyway, the repair was pretty simple and the pipe has been returned to it’s original (intended) state. In retrospect, I should’ve installed a cut-off, as well. I hope this doesn’t come back to bite me one day! 😛

Like I’ve said numerous times, you can always tell what time of year it is by looking at our house…especially Christmastime. Each year, Cindy pulls down the 10s of boxes we have stored in the garage and attic, and creates a display that’ll bring back great memories for the boys’ in the years to come.

Christmas Lights

All I do is put-up the ladder, so she can climb-up on the roof to hang that wreath!

And naturally, she makes the house all Christmasy, too…

Well, it’s the last game of the Fall Ball Season. We were the home team and Adam was the lead-off man. The pitcher was a little wild to start, but Adam had a good-eye for those inside pitches.

Slugger

He had a good-eye for the right pitch, too! CRACK!

What a great way to end the season!

Halloween. What other time would you see Paul Bunyan pulling gummy worms out of a pudding cup? The boys’ were invited to dress-up as a folktale character for school today. Alex, naturally, was all about it. Adam, on the other hands, well, if there’s no candy in it, then what’s the point.

Paul Bunyan

Halloween. A time for ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties to roam free along neighborhood streets in search of sweeties. This year we have an eclectic combination in a giant inflatable T-Rex and the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man!

The boys’ costumes were pretty cool, actually, with little fans built-in to inflate the suit. And although Alex couldn’t see too well out of his Stay Puft head, Adam had a bit of a challenge walking (or should I say waddling?) from door-to-door.

Halloween Halloween

Their costumes were a hit with the neighbors garnering lots of laughs and comments like, “how do you walk in that thing”? Oh, and candy…lots of candy. “Trick-or-Treat”!

Halloween Halloween

And Adam even ran into a cousin among the clowns, superheroes, ninjas, and princesses weaving in-and-out of each other up and down and around the block…

Halloween

Another fun evening! 🙂

Today, Alex earned his second yellow stripe in Taekwondo! It was a little more involved this time, but he executed his moves very well…

And so, with a bow and a handshake from Mr. Titus, the quest for the yellow belt continues! Well done, Alex! We’re very proud of you!

The training season has begun. I always like fall ball because the focus is on skills-development, rather than games and competition. Although with Adam, there’s always competition, and he’s harder on himself than any coach would ever be!
