Growing-up

The boys are 10-years-old today and Adam has already noted that he’s “a decade now.” Where has the time gone? Only a moment ago we were figuring-out the logistics of feeding two babies at the same time! It hasn’t always been easy, but we certainly have created some nice memories.

This year, they needed new bikes. Not only are they outgrowing their current rides, but like most boys, they’re pretty hard on those bikes, as evidenced by the dents, scratches, cracks, and tears decorating them. Each one tells a story, and like most boys, they love their bikes…

Naturally, Mom is all over the “10-years” thing!

And this also marks the first year they boys had a regular cake. As you’ll recall, in previous years, they had a “cake of cupcakes” in the shape of their age, as seen here.

Happy 10-years, Boys!

As you know, the boys had tubes placed in their ears a few years ago (twice, actually). After the tubes are placed, there’s nothing else that needs to be done because they simply fall-out as the child grows. Well, it didn’t work that way for Adam! One of the tubes didn’t just fall-out and it now needs to be removed surgically. Although it’s a very minor surgery, listening to Adam, you’d think it was a major operation. It was funny how excited he was about it, but I’m not sure if it was the surgery itself or just the drama of it… 😉

Of course, when it was over, his ear was a little sore and he wasn’t as thrilled about it anymore…

Well, the Summer Vacation is officially over and it’s the first day of THIRD GRADE! The boys must be getting more mature because neither one of them gave Mom a hard time about taking any pictures this morning. Very proud of them. 😉

So, we’re in Virginia and visiting family. I wish our trip was under better circumstances, as my 99-year-old grandfather (“Pa”) is very ill and not expected to make it through the weekend. Right now he’s home and being attended to by family and Hospice. We drove up yesterday and headed straight to his house. Most of the family were there, so it was pretty crowded. Everyone who came to the house came in to say “hello” to Pa and sit with him for a bit while he lay in his bed; there was singing and a lot of laughter. Although he couldn’t speak very well and he was very weak, I believe he enjoyed the visits.

Today, we spent most of the day with Pa. It was a little rough on the boys, but fortunately, their cousin Mike was there to treat them to rides on his four-wheeler…

Alex has been doing Kung Fu Fighting since he was a very small boy. Now things are getting real! He works very hard while he’s training with his Sensai and is dripping sweat by the time he’s through! And more importantly, he’s having a blast!!

Today Adam had a poetry reading at school…and not just any reading, either. The class was set-up like one of those coffee-houses popular with the Beat Generation in the 50’s and 60’s. Parents were invited to listen to their kids, but instead of clapping, everyone just snapped their fingers!

Adam read a couple of his poems…

Nachos

So spicy could be
crunchy and sweet
could tickle your throat
So skinny and round
taste like cheese with
my yellow dip or more
spicy with the hot red dip
Mexican food so chippy
so yummy explodes so
common
so delicious so smelly
super smooth
Nachos!

and this one about his dog, Charlie…

Dogs!

I am a dog
I have fur
My skin is gold
I have sharp teeth
BARK! BARK!
I am fast
I love water
I have a big black nose.

Lay it on me, man, I dig it!

Adam wanted to pitch during fall ball, but he was overshadowed by other players on the team and didn’t get the opportunity. So we practiced during the winter months to improve his skill and tonight he led the team from the mound for the first time!

Adam on the Mound

He did great! Although the other team got a couple of hits, they couldn’t score…

He was very proud of himself…and so were we!

The boys have a class history project to present. Both of them had to choose a famous person and research their life, develop a timeline of their life and document pertinent history, put together a storyboard, and come to school dressed AS that person. They also have to answer questions from their classmates about their subject person.

Alex chose Sitting Bull…

They helped Mom and Dad make their costumes…

and joined their classmates in presentations…

Mom was able to attend and said they both did very well. Their teachers must have agreed because they each received an “A”!

The best photos are those in which the subject doesn’t know he’s being photographed. I caught Adam watching a YouTube video on his laptop today. His concentration and posture were compelling and made him look more mature than his 9-years would have you believe. Or maybe it’s just because I’m his dad and still see him as a little boy. After all, he taught himself to pitch by watching YouTube. He learned fundamentals and mechanics of the wind-up to which we perfected together on the field. Always inquisitive and forever questioning, he takes the initiative to learn. If that’s not maturity, I don’t know what is.

It’s hard to believe they still sit like this. You’d think it would be uncomfortable, but I suppose after spending almost 9-months as “womb-mates,” this would be considered palatial…
